Who We Are
What We Think
Suzanne Hammelman

More important than any firm’s operational characteristics are the fundamental elements of its character, how its people – the people who are the firm – work, how they act, and what they believe. Key to Hawthorn’s character, and therefore to serving our clients, are thinking smarter, working harder, and caring more.

Thinking Smarter - With the brightest minds, well educated, not only in universities, but over decades of learning from experiences – not just repeating them, Hawthorn pursues a rigorous intellectual discipline, striving to create the most powerful ideas, constantly seeking innovative approaches, holding them to harsh testing, and pursuing them diligently.

Working Harder - Learned in scores of political, public affairs and public relations campaigns, Hawthorn knows well the lesson, “There is no substitute for hard work”… long hours, attention to details, difficult challenges, and tough travel, all to meet the relentless demand for superb performance that exceeds client expectations.

Caring More - A Hawthorn client once said, “You do good work. Our previous agency did good work. The difference is you really care.” Hawthorn’s efforts have enabled it to do the work it wants to do, for clients for whom it wants to work. As a result, perhaps unique among agencies, it can – and does – care, both professionally and personally.

Engagements Map

Hawthorn also brings a unique ‘beyond the beltway’ perspective to public affairs. That ability—to work effectively in the 50 U.S. state capitals, in dozens of diverse, large cities, in hundreds of small towns and nearly deserted crossroads—gives Hawthorn unique effectiveness…both to win fights “out there”…and to mobilize support from “out there” to focus on national public affairs and marketing campaigns.

Recent Hawthorn assignments have included:

  • Developing and implementing an internal communications training program at a nuclear power plant;
  • Creating and managing a multi-state public affairs program for a company managing a massive environmental crisis;
  • Developing and managing a public information campaign for a utility seeking a rate increase and changing its rate structure;
  • Undertaking national and state government relations along with industry relations for a major international manufacturer;
  • Managing a 50-state multi-year grassroots program for a large coalition, and;
  • Creating and managing a multi-year, multi-state lobbying campaign on an environmental issue, and;
  • Monitoring 50 states for regulatory and legislative developments for a major financial company.

Hawthorn maintains the nation’s premier network of state and local affiliates, highly regarded firms with unmatched expert local knowledge of their territory, people, issues, and trends.

Our localized approach reflects, too, a belief in highly individualized communications. Heir to the grassroots and “instant organization” innovations of Hawthorn’s late mentor, Matt Reese, the firm specializes in research-based, strategic campaigns that utilize multi-variant targeting and highly personal interactive communications.
