Job Purpose

As a firm renowned for assisting clients address complex public policy issues and providing strategies and communications to build public support, Hawthorn prides itself on the quality of its research offerings. The research director manages all Hawthorn research programs to anticipate, analyze, and address issues and provide actionable insights to the client service and sales teams of the company.

Job Context and Scope

The research director will find, curate, and analyze data and create issue, industry, and opposition research reports. Responsibilities include collecting and analyzing in-depth issue and industry information and providing timely, accurate and actionable information to client managers and company officers, both in response to specific requests and as part of an on-going assignment to watch for specific issues and trends. The duties may also include multiple daily media reports that are critical and time-sensitive for client projects and Hawthorn.

Principal Skills, Duties and Responsibilities

  • A comprehensive understanding of how the business and services of Hawthorn serve the goals, issues, and strategies of the firm’s clients


  • Collaboration with Hawthorn executives and client managers to deliver focused, succinct, and actionable research that furthers the business objectives of each client project.


  • Maintain and update research resources (credential vendors, execute contracts, etc.).


  • Ability to work well under pressure to manage multiple internal and external projects simultaneously and deliver final work products on time. The definition of a final work product is that it is comprehensive with sound analysis and recommendations, fact checked, and edited for spelling and grammatical errors.


  • Ability to respond in a timely manner, as appropriate, to weekend and after-hours requests from project managers and executives.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree is required.  A minimum of two years’ experience in political research and/or public affairs issues management is required. This position requires a working understanding of how to identify and utilize all research tools, from digital (including social media) to traditional methods (on-the-ground research, personal outreach, etc.).

Essential Skills

Must be a self-starter with excellent project management skills, attention to detail and follow up. This position requires significant creative thinking and the ability to solve problems and analyze data and synthesize information.  Excellent communication skills (particularly writing) are required to produce focused, succinct products that address the issues and assignments.
